Richard from Rammstein on World Cup and fire

Friday, June 25, 2010

richram250Before Rammstein turn Istanbul into a burning Byzantium we caught up with Rammstein’s lead guitarist Richard Z. Kruspe who celebrated his birthday yesterday in true shock-rocker style in an aeroplane with a cake. Like most of his countrymen, he’s pretty confident Germany will beat England in the World Cup on Sunday.

“My expectations are pretty high,” he explains. “I just don’t want to be sent home by England so that’s the only thing I am worried about,” adding, “motherfuckers” while laughing.

There are no birthday surprises in store for the 45,000 fans who’ve turned out to see the show tonight.

“One of the sad things is we’re pretty much doing the same thing with the fire on stage, because it has to be really organised, especially if you’re playing outside. First of all fire is uncontrollable and then you have another factor which is the wind,” he explains “The wind can blow in every direction and you have to be careful where you go with it. It’s the good thing about Rammstein in that it’s so organised, but then sometimes I feel like I would like to play in a band like Pearl Jam, which have nothing. It’s kind of a curse sometimes with Rammstein. You build something and then people expect a lot visually, so it’s sometimes hard to do less.”
